"Deep ruby red, the 2017 Exzellenz exhibits tightly wound aromas that take time to open. Deep and intense layers of black cherry, earth, freshly ground coffee, warm baking spice. The palate is powerful and energetic - full of inky dark fruits, chocolate, and leather. The dense frame of tannin is supported by a supple and full mid-palate that leads into a very lengthy, slightly dusty finish."

Vineyard notes

Sacrashe Vineyard

Located just above the eastern edge of the Rutherford appellation at 790 feet, Sacrashe provides a profound expression of what hillside Cabernet Sauvignon can be.

Challenging Soil Conditions

Extremely limiting volcanic tuff soils are mixed with rock and lie over a structure of bedrock. These challenging conditions yield fruit that is rich, dense, earthy, and opulent.

Unique Climate

The cooling effects of Lake Hennessey, combined with southern sun exposure, result in additional berry complexity that is reflected in the wine's dense fruit flavors.

Wine Facts

The goal here is dark black fruit, power, chewy tannin, and a focused palate. Our Sacrashe Estate vineyard is hidden atop the eastern ridge of the Vaca Mountain Range in Rutherford. With extremely limiting volcanic tuff soils and gentle sloping aspects, this vineyard yields fruit that is always rich, dense, earthy, and opulent - it possesses a purity of focus and dense tannic structure.

Vintage Notes

Our 2017 harvest wrapped up early fall following summer heat spurts and a growing season that saw significant rain throughout the state, ending a five-year drought. The season began with rainfall that refilled reservoirs and replenished soils. Harvest began early at a normal pace, and then progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled in mid-September, slowing the harvest pace and allowing grapes to ripen gradually. This is a strong quality vintage.
